THE SECTION OF NEWER HISTORY AND MODERN PERIOD

The Section of newer history and modern period has been dealing with studying of the town past since the 20th century till the present-day. It consists of the following collections:

  •  The Cultural-Historical Collection

Contains objects and documents about the cultural history of Vršac and its nearer and farther surroundings. The fund of the theatre posters, photographs from some performances, scenographies, costume designs, which are the testimony of the rich theatre tradition in the town is very significant. There are also numerous posters and photographs of the cultural-artistic societies in this collection, as well as the photo-documentation about the eminent citizens of Vršac (Jovan Sterija Popović, a writer and comedist, Bora Kostić, a chess grand master, Dragiša Brašovan, an architect, Sultana Cijuk, an opera singer and others).

  • The Collection of Photographs and Postcards

Gives us the possibility to get to know everything about the town past, through the urbanistic and architectural development, to notice technical and technological changes, to make the parallel between Vršac in the past and Vršac today. The oldest photograph from the collection dates from 1857, and the postcards cover the period of the first half of the 20th century.

  • The Collection for the History of Sport

Contains objects and documents for the history and development of physical culture. In the first half of the 20th century there were many sport societies in the town (ASK “Dušan Silni” - (Dušan the Powerful), ASK “Viktorija”, “Privrednik”, SK “Radnički”, ASK “Trgovački”, “Soko”, “Hazena”...), while today, Vršac is well-known in the sport circles thanks to basketball.

  • The Collection of the Workers' Movement

is made up of the photo-documentation and archival materials about the activities and actions of the revolutionaries from this area: Žarko Zrenjanin, Anđa Ranković, Olga Petrov-Radišić, Borislav Petrov-Braca, Slavko Munćan, Pera Jovanović, Dejan Brankov, Mila Matejić, Lukrecija Ankucić, Koriolan Doban, Rudolf Kornauer, Janoš Lenđel, Strahinja Stefanović and others, who all gave their lives for the free Yugoslavia and the fight against the fascism.

In this department there are also the records and documentation about the public monuments and memorial objects from the territory of the Vršac municipality.

  • The Collection of Modern History

It collects the materials about our time, registers all the important changes in the society and follows the entire development of our environment. The tendencies in the modern historiography, in the world and in our country, are to contribute more in order to give the present moment its adequate place in the historical researches. Experience and practise have shown that it is always easier and faster to provide the documentation and materials relating to a particular event, at the moment of happening, than later. The Museum uses collected and processed objects about the contemporaries for permanent exhibitions and thematic exhibitions, and at the same time they represent the well-systematized collections of the museum objects, with the accompanying documentation, as the valuable materials for the research work.
